Wasps at the outdoor table: why are there so many in August and how to protect yourself?
In August, lunch on the terrace or a quiet cup of coffee in the garden often attracts uninvited guests. Once fruit, dessert, meat dishes, or sweet drinks are placed on the table, wasps may soon appear. Sometimes it seems that by the end of summer, their numbers significantly increase.
This is not just a coincidence. By the end of summer, wasp behavior and food needs change, causing them to more frequently seek easily accessible food in human environments. Knowing what attracts them can significantly reduce the likelihood of unpleasant encounters.
Why do wasps become so noticeable in August?
In early summer, a wasp colony grows intensely, with worker wasps dedicating a large part of their time to the nest and larvae.
As summer draws to a close, the situation changes. There are many adult wasps in the colony, and their need to independently seek energy-rich food increases.
Therefore, in August, they are particularly attracted to:
- ripe and damaged fruit;
- juices and lemonades;
- ice cream and desserts;
- jams;
- food left on the table;
- open trash cans.
As a result, wasps become much more frequently seen on terraces, balconies, and outdoor dining areas.
What on the table most attracts wasps?
The biggest source of attraction is usually easily accessible food.
Sweet products provide wasps with energy, but they can also be interested in meat and other protein-rich foods.
It is especially important to protect open drink cans and opaque bottles. A wasp entering unnoticed can remain inside.
It is safer to keep drinks covered outdoors, and always check the container before drinking.
Why shouldn't you swat your hands?
When a wasp starts flying around food, the natural reaction is to try to shoo it away.
However, sudden movements and attempts to swat the insect can increase the risk of stinging. It is better to remain calm, cover the food, and allow the insect to leave.
If many wasps constantly appear at the table, the problem may not be the food itself. There might be an active nest nearby or a location that regularly attracts them.
How to reduce the number of wasps on the terrace?
Keep food covered
Bring products to the table just before eating, and do not leave them outdoors longer than necessary.
Take leftover dishes indoors as soon as possible.
